Providing leadership during San Bruno's most challenging times.

From the PG&E tragedy (serving as vice-mayor), the shooting incidents at YouTube and Tanforan Mall, the national conversation around social justice, COVID-19, balancing the budget and the tear gas incident at the San Francisco County Jail, Rico has handled a variety of crises. As San Bruno Chair of the Disaster Council, Rico has proven his ability to provide leadership should another situation arise in the community.

The knowledge and experience Rico brings to being your mayor are needed at a local and regional level. Rico is working with his colleagues in San Bruno, San Mateo County and City staff to maintain essential services, keep residents safe, support local businesses, and make fiscally responsible choices in order to navigate and move San Bruno forward.

What Rico Has Been Doing

Public Safety

This is important to our community and we are fortunate to have well trained staff that prepares on scenarios that no one wants to talk about or think about but we need to be prepared.  These trainings have been done and have taken place at our High School, Parkside, with the county and the transportation agencies' our community the last one being done in June of this year.

Fiscal Responsibility

Having the experience and knowledge that have had balanced budgets even through tough times and making decisions to keep to our essential service going. With our new car dealership being built next Jack’s and the one on El Camino Real remodled to bring in sales tax revenue to our city.

Fire Mitigation

After staff and I were successful at the Federal Court to convert the community service hours that PG&E was required to do.  San Bruno had those hours turned into money so we could have fire mitigation in the canyon which had not been done.  In addition, the chipper program in district 1 and 2, defensible space next to homes (taking a section a year in neighborhood). Having the  California Conversation Corps coming in to clean up areas in the canyon.

Street, Sidewalk, Bike and Pedestrian Safety

Thanks to the voters with measure G we spent 21.5 million dollars between 2020-2021 to 2024-2025 budgets on paving streets. Bike and Ped project on Huntington which is underway, San Bruno received 1.4 million dollars from the San Mateo Transportation Authority which I serve on and voted for. We have improved sidewalks / curbs so those may find it easier to get around. Adding crosswalk flashing lights at some intersections and some schools.

Supporting Education

In 2023, I personally went to each public and private school in San Bruno to visit each campus to check in and offer my support. Working with my colleagues on the school board at San Bruno Park Elementary School District after the tear gas incident to make sure that does not happen again. With the San Mateo Union High School District being asked to speak in August to the entire faculty prior to this years school starting and attending the Superintendent meetings representing San Bruno as part of a district community.

Ongoing Priorities

These are some exciting times with the opening of our new recreation and aquatic center and we want to continue that momentum with:

  • Finishing the new centennial plaza and other downtown approved improvements

  • Building of the new car dealership on the vacant lot next to Jack’s

  • Maintaining streets, sidewalks, sewers, and other infrastructure

  • Working on Florida Park

  • Continuing our fire mitigation

  • Having Public Safety fully staffed and prepared to protect our community

  • Completing our housing elements

  • Building new soccer fields so our youth have a permanent place to play and practice

  • Making city operations more efficient to deliver services fairly across all neighborhoods

  • Finding funding and brining fare gates to San Bruno BART sooner

  • Ensuring our Sr. Center has resources to continue offering lunches and programs

  • Climate Action Plan
